WHAT A gambrel-roof house with four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms that was built in 1789 in Connecticut and reconstructed in 1996 on a Vermont hilltop
HOW MUCH $1.5 million
SIZE 3,952 square foot
PRICE PER SQUARE FOOT $380
SETTING The house is in a small town about an hour east of Killington, Vt., and a half-hour north of Hanover, N.H. The area may be best known for an annual agricultural showcase that since 1867 has been called the Tunbridge World’s Fair.
INDOORS The home was rebuilt with salvaged materials, using original tools and methods, but all the mechanical systems are contemporary. The several working fireplaces, for instance, were constructed with antique brick to proportions that maximize their efficiency, as if they were the house’s only heating source (they are not, and the chimneys are modern). The 12-over-12 sash windows similarly reproduce an early style but are double-glazed.
The main level has an open living and dining area, and a kitchen with hand-built cabinets and a decorative painted floor. A parlor, a study, a guest room with a full bathroom and a powder room are also on this level. Upstairs is a master suite with a bathroom and a connecting room that could be used as a study; two guest bedrooms and bathrooms; and a laundry area. The attached three-car garage is an antique barn that was added to the property.
OUTDOOR SPACE A fenced cutting garden is in front the house, outside of the family room. The 115-acre property is interlaced with trails and has plenty of maple trees to tap.
